Personal Management MB Kickoff – 3/13

I’d like to remind everyone that this coming Tuesday, March 13th in the troop room we will hold the reschedule of the 2018 Personal Management merit badge kickoff meeting. An hour before this week’s troop meeting we will walk through each requirement, and give you a picture of the 10 major items that you will learn as part of this Eagle Required merit badge.

To get you started, here also is a link to the merit badge worksheet, which outlines what you will need to cover, and along with the merit badge booklet will be your guide in completing all personal management requirements for the badge.

March 6 Meetings – Important Info

Greetings!

Troop Meeting: This week’s 7pm Tuesday meeting (3.6.18) will be held OFFSITE at 5337 E Thunderbird Road; Zane will be leading a meeting regarding Canoeing skills. He has asked everyone to bring a swim suit.

PLC Meeting: The PLC Meeting will be at 6pm (as usual) and will also be held at the address above; not at CCC this week.

Parent/Committee Meeting: Because we are offsite, we will have a brief “standing” Committee Meeting. I will keep the agenda as short as possible. (This meeting will NOT be held at the usual location, so that everyone does not have to drive to multiple locations.) Primary topics will include pancake breakfast and summer camp.

Thanks!

**Urgent – Merit Badge Cancellation Tonight

Troop 648,

My apologies, your host for tonight’s session has a nasty case of the flu he has been fighting for three days. The fever abated last night, and I worked from home, but the fever and bronchitis have returned this afternoon. We will NOT have the Personal Management Merit Badge kickoff session tonight at 6PM.

I will work with Dr. Blair to reschedule – likely for sometime in March. This is not a gift that I wish to give you while soldiering through tonight’s session – it would not be good personal hygiene management!

Mr. Cole

***Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser Update***

Dear Troop 648 Parents,

Our annual T648 Pancake Breakfast and Silent Auction is scheduled for Saturday, April 28 at Chaparral Christian Church. As in past years, there will be a Patrol Basket raffle. Since April is a busier month for some, we would like to start collecting basket items now.

We need your help to make the basket raffle a big success! Each patrol has a basket theme. We are asking every scout family to donate an item according to their son’s patrol basket theme. We suggest the value be $15+, but please give whatever you feel most comfortable donating. No donation is too big or too small. If you prefer, you can opt to procure a donated item or gift card from a business to add to the patrol basket on behalf of your family.

Items should be new. Suggested items to donate are listed below, but any theme-appropriate item will be appreciated. The more exciting the basket, the more money it will generate from raffle ticket sales. Please note: Every Scout who donates an item or gift card to a raffle basket will receive a portion of the raffle proceeds. Earnings will be deposited into their troop account.

Please send in donations to a weekly troop meeting.

2018 Winter Olympics – T648 Version

Hello Troop 648

We are back from the north after a fun-filled ski weekend! 19 Scouts and Scouters set out Friday night, managed through a long travel delay, and eventually pulled into our weekend accommodations for a two-night stay in snowy Flagstaff.

Our destination Saturday morning for a day of skiing and snowboarding was Snowbowl ski resort. About 9″ of snow fell the day before and sometime after midnight, the storm cleared and we experienced a ‘blue bird’ day! We enjoyed another fantastic hot lunch prepared by Rick Parizek and Ryan Bollimpalli and great camaraderie. We experienced one unfortunate ankle injury, but otherwise had an awesome time.

Terrific job leading the group SPL Drew Achor. Special thanks to our adult volunteers and drivers Scott Starr, Charlie Carson, Bruce Weinhold, Jacob Benyi and Rick Parizek. Thank you also to Jody Achor for letting us borrow your car (yay 4WD!) and to Mr. Parizek for making another incredible grilled lunch. We are always the envy of other skiers as they walk by Mr. P’s amazing spread!

If you have photos from this trip and would like to upload and share to the Troop website, please click here. Thanks!

See you soon,

Personal Management Merit Badge 2/27 6PM

Once your days of being in Troop 648 are over, you will have learned a ton of important life skills – first aid, cooking, camping, and more! As an adult, you may never use these skills to save a life, you may discover that restaurants are the place to go to get cooked food, and your wife’s idea of camping may be in a Hilton. However, I can guarantee that you will have plenty of opportunities to use personal management to save yourself time and money (especially if you are spending lots of time in restaurants and Hiltons!) As mentioned during the past two troop meetings, this year’s Personal Management Merit Badge session will kick off next Tuesday night at 6PM in the troop room ahead of the troop meeting. You don’t need the book to begin, but if you plan to take the badge, I’d recommend two things: buy the book, and be old enough to have some sort of semi-regular income to manage (jobs at home, allowance, regular gifts all qualify). One of the key tasks will be to build a three month budget, and then track all income and out-goes during the entire quarter. We hold these every year, so if this is not the year for you – next year may be. The merit badge is a long one, but a good one, and one you will use the rest of your life!

Here also is a link to the worksheet, which will give you an idea what you will learn, and be your guide throughout the merit badge.

Hope to see you Tuesday night at 6:00PM

Emergency Preparedness Requirement 7a Invite

Attention Troop 648. The Scottsdale Department of Emergency Management will be conducting a Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) program that culminates into a full-scale disaster drill. In the past they have used local Boy Scout Troops to assist with the exercise as simulated victims and runners. It’s a key aspect of the exercise, and the scouts often have a good time as that get made up with various injuries and get to play victims, then be rescued by the students who have completed the 6-week program. The upcoming class will be doing their disaster drill on March 24th. It will start early in the morning that day and go into the early afternoon. This activity helps to fulfill a very hard to coordinate and accomplish requirement for the Emergency Preparedness Merit Badge (Eagle Required) – Section 7a.
They will also do some basic fire safety with the Scouts, and teach them how to extinguish a fire with fire extinguishers. The fire is live, and controlled, but gives them a good opportunity to see how well they work to put out a small fire.

RSVP by clicking here. Please respond by March 5th.

Thank you.

Upcoming Court of Honor

Hello Troop 648

We have our Spring, 2018 Court of Honor coming up next week, Tuesday February 20th. Thank you if you volunteered to bring an item (food, service ware, drinks, etc) to help celebrate. We appreciate it.

Also, we wanted to share what we have planned in terms of Merit Badges and Rank advancements. Please check over our list below. We will be awarding anything earned since the last Court which was on October 17, 2017. If you have transferred from another troop, we may only be presenting what rank or blue card was turned into us since you joined. We can work with you to present other items if you let us know (assuming they haven’t already been presented at a previous Court). It is possible that your Scout advanced through more than one rank. If that is the case, we will be presenting both ranks.

Please notify us of any changes by 5:00pm on Saturday. If we don’t connect by then, not to worry. We can catch what we miss at the next Court (June 12, 2018).

Finally, if your Scout is receiving something, yes it is okay to have other family members (or friends) present!

Unfortunately, business calls and I will be out of town for this Court. I wish that wasn’t the case, but I’ll be there in spirit!

Have a great weekend!
