!!!Meeting Location Change for Tues, August 15!!!

Hello Troop 648

As part of our Physical Fitness theme for the month of August, Scout Liam Brotherton has put together an awesome evening next week for our Tuesday troop meeting! We will NOT be meeting at Chaparral Christian Church, but instead at an off-site location. Specifically, and from Liam…

“Our Tuesday, August 15, 2017 regular troop meeting will be held at Maui Saito Ninjitsu, 16585 N. 92nd Street, #112 in Scottsdale, AZ. Maui Saito Ninjitsu is south of the Scottsdale Ice Den.

Some info about Saito Ninjitsu:

Saito Ninjitsu is a martial art that is only meant to do good and/or defend yourself or 0thers. It is not meant to cause harm. Ancient Japanese farmers of the Saito Clan secretly learned Saito Ninjitsu to protect their families and others. For more information, please click here to learn about Saito Ninjitsu.

Also, please click here to complete the waiver BEFORE our meeting. If you have any questions, you can reach Master Maui (pictured below) at (480) 721-2626.

Thank you and I look forward to seeing everyone there, Liam!”

Liam will be there at 6:30pm to welcome scouts and then to lead the meeting which will run from 7:00pm – 8:30pm. Suggest you arrive about 10 minutes before 7. Please wear your class B (red troop 648 t-shirt) and comfortable shorts as we will be active on the mats. Adults are encouraged to join in with the scouts! And a big thank you to Liam for organizing the meeting. It promises to be a great time!

One of our own to receive Eagle Scout!

Greetings!

Congratulations to Will Turner, a former member of Troop 648, who has earned his Eagle Scout and will have his Eagle Court of Honor on August 27, 2017 at 5:00pm in Naperville, IL.

For those who don’t know Will, the Turner’s were members of our Troop prior to moving to Illinois in the summer of 2014. Will’s father, Paul, was a former Scoutmaster of Troop 648, and both Paul and Will returned to join our 2015 Philmont expedition.

After moving to Illinois, Will has continued to excel in Scouting and many other areas, and he earned his Eagle Scout this past Spring. Will is now looking ahead to college applications and his Scouting experience will undoubtedly be a benefit in that process.

Anyone wishing to send Congratulations to Will can send a note to: paulrichardturner@gmail.com. I am planning to represent Troop 648 at the ceremony; anyone else wishing to attend is welcome.

Congratulations to Will!

Swimming Merit Badge Opportunity!

Hello Troop 648

Through combined efforts with Cub Scout Pack 682, as well as Boy Scout Troops 648 and 869, we bring your Scout an opportunity to work on a number of requirements for the Eagle-required Swimming Merit Badge!
We will meet Sunday, August 13th, 2pm at the MEETING ROOM of the McDowell Mountain Aquatic Center - 15525 N Thompson Peak Pkwy, Scottsdale, (480) 312-6677. Please check with the front desk when you check in.  Admission is free!
Mike Coppo (Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 869, former U.S. Navy officer with numerous swimming related survival certificates and also an accomplished triathlete) will be giving a safety lecture in the meeting room and then we’ll move to the lap pool for the swim test.  A Head Lifeguard from the Aquatic Center will be assisting the boys with requirements #4-7.  Please have your Scout familiarize themselves with the requirements prior to the event and/or read through the MB pamphlet. We have a number in the Troop Library so check with our Librarian, Eric Achor.
The Webelos Den from Cub Scout Pack 682 and Boy Scouts from Troop 869 will be joining us, so it should be a fun event for everyone.  The pools, lazy river and slide will be open until 5pm, so your Scout is welcome to stay as long as they like, but the official Scouting event will probably wrap up by 3pm.  One parent/guardian must be on premise if your Scout stays later than our event.  We also encourage the Scout to observe the buddy system at all times.  Siblings are welcome to attend.  Did we mention that there is no charge for this event?
See you on the 13th!

Need Adults for Outing

Hello Troop 648

We are in great need for a few adults to lead/drive Scouts for our backpack outing to Wet Beaver Creek this weekend.

If you have time and are willing to help, please let me know as soon as possible (dmcfetters@gmail.com, (602) 793-1058). The outing is in jeopardy of being cancelled due to a lack of adult leaders.

Thanks,

Scoutmaster T648

A Few Key Troop 648 Reminders

Hello Troop 648

I hope you are enjoying your summer! Thank goodness for AC and swimming pools!

A few key reminders:

  1. We have a backpack outing not this, but next weekend – Friday, August 5th – Sunday, August 7th to Wet Beaver Creek – click here. Zach Ramsey is the Scout in charge and Mike Conrad is the adult. Please let Mike (mickjeco@gmailcom), Zach or myself (dmcfetters@gmail.com) know if you plan on attending ASAP. This is a mild to medium skilled backpacking trip and a great one if your Scout is looking to try out backpacking. More info to come.
  2. Our PLC retreat is coming up – Friday, August 18th – Sunday, August 20th. We are working on filling out the roles for next year and will have that info next week. If your Scout is 8th grade and First Class or above or currently part of the PLC, count on him being part of the troop leadership next year. Depending on how many other roles we need to fill, we may place a couple younger, but experienced Scouts in a role. We will be in touch soon on this.
  3. Upcoming meeting schedules and who is leading them:
    • August 1 – Brandon Bollimpalli
    • August 8 – Aidan Brown
    • August 15 – OPEN (we need someone to lead this meeting, please contact me)
    • August 22 – Sam Gay
    • August 29 – Arjun Blair
    • September 5 – Nick Murphy
    • September 12 – Ian Achor
    • September 19 – Ryan Bollimpalli
    • September 26 – Michael DeBarros
  4. The theme for August is Physical Fitness and September is First Aid. Please let me know if you have any questions about what your Scout should be doing.

That’s it for now. Have a great rest of the week and weekend and see you all soon!

Quick Medication Follow-up from Camp Geronimo

Greetings Troop 648,
What a wonderful week up at camp Geronimo!  Thanks to all who participated.
If you gave me medication for your Scout to dispense at camp I will bring these to the meeting this Tuesday (July 18) to hand back.  Please contact me if you need these medications sooner.
Thanks,
Dr. Komar

Summer Camp in Full Swing!

Hello Troop 648

Sorry for the delay in getting this out.

Summer camp at Camp Geronimo is nearing the end. The Scouts and Scouters have been having a great time with lots of stories to tell and memories to fondly look back on.

Camp has seen its fair share of rain which helps keep the dust down, but increases the likelihood that your Scout’s duffle bag/backpack will be about 10 pounds heavier with mud!

I hope you have enjoyed a relatively quiet week and see you all on Saturday in the church parking lot!

Best,

Scoutmaster T648

Fearless Leaders!

This is the main shade structure in our camp, which included a couple picnic benches.

Morning flag ceremony in the center of camp

Our commuter highway

Did not take long for the card games to start

Nor did it take long for rank requirement discussions

Home for our ‘full time’ adult leaders for the week. Nice place, low maintenance.

Upcoming Meetings Information

Greetings!

We had a wonderful outing this weekend at Willow Springs Lake; thanks to all who attended. Here are a few reminders for upcoming Troop things:

  1. Our Troop meeting on Tuesday, June 27 will be held at the Paradise Valley REI, not at CCC. (12634 N Paradise Village Pkwy) – It is in the parking lot by Target on  the west side of the PV Mall. We will be having a special equipment demonstration and instruction pertaining to various camping gear. The meeting will be at the usual time; 7:00pm-8:30pm.
  2. The following week, our meeting is cancelled due to the 4th of July holiday that day. Enjoy the holiday!
  3. Just a few days later, on July 8th, we will depart for a week of fun at Summer Camp. I will send out a final information meeting about summer camp this week. Just as a reminder, I need to collect completed annual health and medical forms for every participant. If you haven’t turned in your health form, please get it to me ASAP! If anyone has questions about camp, please contact me.
  4. Because the majority of the group will be at Summer Camp, there will be no regular troop meeting on Tuesday, July 11. We will resume regular, weekly meetings at CCC on Tuesday, July 18.

Thanks!

Mr. Benyi

Happy Fathers Day, Court of Honor, Willow Springs

Greetings and Happy Father’s Day everyone!

We will be having our Summer Court of Honor this coming Tuesday, June 20 at 7pm in the East Hall at CCC. Join us for a celebration of the accomplishments of our many talented scouts. And for those of you willing to brave the heat, we will have ice cream following the ceremony. We hope to see you there.

The Willow Springs canoe trip is coming up this weekend. This is a great opportunity to work on advancement and have some FUN out of this heat; it will be quite a bit cooler up on the Rim. If you haven’t signed up and are planning to attend, please signup on the Signup Genius so that we can plan accordingly. We do have someone towing the canoe trailer, but we are still in need of someone to tow the Troop Trailer. If you are able to help us with this, please let me know ASAP.

For those going to Summer Camp, please don’t forget to complete your annual Health and Medical evaluations, (Forms A/B/C) by the end of this month. If you have any questions about this, please ask.

Lastly, here is a great article about many of the great things we get to do as Boy Scouts: http://scoutingwire.org/open-letter-to-the-parents-of-scout-aged-boys-things-i-did-because-i-was-a-boy-scout/

Have a great week!
