So this month’s outing will be a sort of combo basecamp / backpack outing. Everyone will be responsible for their own food (as if it were a backpacking trip). The troop will meet at Blessed Sacrament at 5 pm on Friday and depart sharply at 5:30 so please be punctual and dressed in your Class A uniform for the drive up and back. Each scout should bring $5 for gas. The troop will stop in Anthem for dinner on Friday and in Black Canyon for pie on the way home Sunday so make sure each scout has about $20 to cover both meals. Mr. Gingrich is heading up early Friday morning to try and snag a good spot north of road along the Agua Fria River. We will have some firewood for a fire but try not to create any new fire pits. Highs in the 70s during the day and lows maybe into the 30s at night so bring layers of clothes for the day and evening after the sun goes down and a nice warm sleeping bag and tent (or have your tent buddy identified). We will do day hikes during Saturday with some up to 5 miles so good hiking boots are a must. This is a great intro to backpacking for some of our younger scouts and a learning opportunity! We will be hiking in about 1 mile on Friday over fairly flat terrain but in the dark so a headlamp or flashlight is a must (Home Depot has a 3-pack for about $15). We are bringing water for the troop but each scout will need a water bottle or camelback for the day hikes. This outing will offer lots of opportunity for advancement so bring your scoutbook!!
Thanks,
Mr. Turner
