A Note From Elvin and Kay Clapp

Hello Troop 648

I would like to thank all of the past and present scouts who have provided me with real life opportunities as you pursued your scouting career. You are the leaders of our future, which is no simple task given the complexities of our communities and nation. You have taught me to be “more” patient and understanding of your needs. You have given me the inspiration to stay in scouting. You mean more to me that I could possibly write in this note. I wish you the best in the future, and hope you can continue to be actively involved in the scouting movement.

Thanks to all of the adult leaders for the quality leadership and hard work that you have dedicated to our youth. You have stepped up and volunteered your valuable time and efforts to provide a quality environment for our scouts to succeed. Imagine all those Friday afternoons getting ready to hike and camp, all the advancement responsibilities, the fund raising events, newsletter preparation, training coordination, other committee work, and the Arizona Scouting Museum. Also, many of you have volunteered a great amount of your time to lead the Four Peaks District and the Grand Canyon Council at various levels. And remember, it only takes “an hour a week.”

Thanks to all of the parents who have supported Troop 648. Many of you have worked tirelessly, behind the scenes, for your sons to succeed in scouting. Regardless of what rank they achieve, these boys will always gain valuable skills and knowledge from the outings, service projects, special events, and summer camps. You are the unsung heroes of scouting.

You are a fine organization. Your legacy of molding young boys into fine men is to be commended. We will always be indebted to you from the bottom of our hearts. We will truly miss you, but we look forward to working with a new troop to share our Troop 648 knowledge and experiences.

Finally, Kay and I would like to thank Troop 648 for the great send off at the last court of honor and the gift of a limited edition Scout Handbook. Take care and stay in touch.

Elvin and Kay Clapp

Troop Meeting Tuesday, November 21st

Hello Troop 648

We will be helping out the church during our weekly troop meeting this Tuesday, November 21st. Our service project will be to spread sand with push brooms on the pavers in the Labyrinth. This will help ensure a flat, stable surface for church members visiting this outside prayer area.

Please bring a push broom if you have one.

Also, if you have any BSA Class A, Troop 648 Class B shirts or pants/shorts that no longer fit you, we are running a little low on our free uniform exchange. You can bring them to the meeting on Tuesday.

Finally, Sean Hart is looking for volunteers (Scouts, adults, friends, family) to sign-up for Follow-the-Star shifts (Dec 9, 10, 11). He will have more information on Tuesday.

I look forward to seeing you this Tuesday!

Thank You,
Joe Hart

Loy Canyon/Sedona Backpacking Oct 22-23

Hello Troop 648

Wrapping up final prep for our backpack outing this weekend. We are scheduled to backpack into Loy Canyon in the Sedona area.

This trail leads up a desert wilderness canyon offering excellent views. The well constructed path was used by the Samuel Loy family in the 1880’s to move their livestock to and from summer pastures on the canyon’s rim.

The trail starts out by skirting the fence line of the Hancock Ranch. Sheer cliffs of vermilion and buff sandstone form a colorful backdrop for the desert garden of manzanita, catclaw, cholla and prickly pear that carpets the canyon floor. Natural rock sculptures carved by flash floods and spring runoff that seasonally course down this normally dry streambed provide scenic settings. Underground moisture is sufficient year-round to support a desert riparian area rich in bird and other animal life.

Near the end of the canyon, the trail becomes strenuous, completing the majority of the 1680 foot climb to a high saddle that leads to the top of a mesa called Secret Mountain in the Red Rock-Secret Mountain Wilderness. We will pitch our tents on top of this mesa in the pine trees. Beautiful!

The trail will be dry so everyone should be prepared to bring all their water (5-6 liters). Additionally, you will need to bring you own food and gear for this overnighter. Weather is expected to be clear with highs in the mid 80s and lows in the low 50s to high 40s. Please be prepared for cool temps Saturday night.

We will leave Saturday morning from the church parking lot near the shed at 7am. If you are going, please email dmcfetters@gmail.com or call me at (602) 793-1058 as soon as possible.

Thanks and see you this weekend!

Support for the Benyi Family

Dear Troop 648,

Please help support and comfort the Benyi family and their close friends who are coming into town this week to attend Richard Benyi’s memorial service.

Our help is needed with purchasing or making food to be served Friday evening at the Benyi home. Carol, Jacob’s mom, is expecting around 35 people for a post reception gathering. Your generous contribution will be greatly appreciated by the family. You can view items needed and sign up by clicking here.

Please plan to drop-off food at Carol’s house, 5549 E. Cholla, Scottsdale (just off 56th Ave.) this Thursday (10/20), between 2PM-6PM, or Friday (10/21), between 9AM-11AM. If neither of these times work for you, please call Carol at 480-209-8978 to make other arrangements.

If possible, please use disposable containers. If you’d like your containers back, please label them with your name and telephone number.

Thank you again for being so thoughtful and kind!

With gratitude,

Karin and Doug McFetters
