Ski Trip Details – Feb 19-21
Hello Troop 648
My apologies for the late notice on the upcoming ski trip. It is shaping up to be another fantastic trip to the mountains for some fun on the slopes! The following will provide details.
- We will meet, load up and leave from Chaparral Christian Church, back near the shed. Please plan on arriving at 5:00pm with expectation of leaving at 5:30pm sharp.
- We are heading up to Snowbowl in Flagstaff this year. They have an excellent base of snow and the conditions are great. All lifts and runs are currently open.
- If we have at least 15 sign-up, we will qualify for a group discount on our lift tickets and lessons. I think between the Scouts and Adults going, we should get there.
- I will need to know if you are going to sign-up for a lesson. If this is your first time skiing/snowboarding, it’s required. If you have been a few times, you may consider a lesson in the morning as a refresher.
- We have made arrangements with Alpine Board Sports for equipment rentals. They will be providing a 20% discount! To rent equipment, follow these instructions:
- The group discount is 20%.  The online promo code is ‘Troop648’ (minus the quotes).
- Anyone booking online should click here and start by selecting Skis or Snowboards and choose the multi-day option. Set the pick-up date for 2/19/16 and the drop off date for 2/21/16.  The site will calculate the correct rate – it should be the cost of a one day rental. Be sure to enter code Troop648 in the promo field when checking out.
- If you are going into the store, make sure you mention that you are with Troop 648 to facilitate the pick-up and appropriate discount. Scottsdale Retail Location: 7101 E Thunderbird Rd, Suite 101, Scottsdale, AZ 85254, (602) 992-0567. Just west of Scottsdale Road on Thunderbird.
- Please be sure to secure your rentals by Friday, Feb 19 as Mr. Brown and I will pick up all the equipment by noon on Friday. We will drop off all the equipment on Sunday afternoon, so no extra work for you!
- You can also rent helmets and outwear if you need them. Helmets are required per BSA policy.
- Your Scout should plan on bringing money or pack a dinner for Friday night. We will stop off at the food court at Anthem to eat.
- We will eat all meals as a troop. Therefore, Sat breakfast, lunch and dinner and Sunday breakfast will be provided. Total cost will depend on total number of attendees. We will also have gas fees.
- Total fees for the trip are still to be determined, but are estimated to be:
- Dinner Friday night = $8-$10 (at your discretion)
- Lift ticket – $40-$50 ($40 if we get 15 or more)
- OPTIONAL: Lesson (typically includes a lift ticket) approx. $65
- Rentals $25-$35 (for skis, snowboards are a bit more)
- Sat/Sunday meals = $20-$40
- Cabin = $0, thanks Harry Kramer!
- Gas = $8-$10
- Everyone will need a sleeping bag and sleeping pad as well as a towel, soap and shampoo. We will have the opportunity to clean up after skiing. Also, don’t forgot your winter gear for the mountain.
- Please let me know as soon as you can if your Scout and/or you are planning to attend. If we are going to take advantage of the lift ticket discount, we need a headcount asap – we need to send paperwork to Snowbowl by Weds. Also, please let me know if you are willing to drive and if you or your Scout have any dietary restrictions.
Thanks,

A Few Troop Reminders
Hello Troop 648
I hope your week is off to a great start. A few reminders:
- PLC (Scouts in leadership positions) is tomorrow night, Feb 2nd, 6:00pm. For the PLC Scouts, please be prepared to discuss your February meeting.
- Please join us this Thursday, Feb 4th at 7:00pm for the Annual Four Peaks District Awards. Among others, the District will be honoring Mr. Benyi with the Silver Beaver Award! The Award recognizes registered Scouters of exceptional character who have provided distinguished service within a council and is well deserved! Previous Troop 648 Silver Beaver recipients include Dean Butler, Rick Parizek, Elvin Clapp and Jack Patton. The ceremony will take place at 4242 East Waltann Lane in Phoenix, Arizona. The building is on the northwest corner of 43rd Street and Waltann Lane.
- Drew Achor is planning an Equipment Organization event for Sunday, Feb 7th. We will need some help if you are available, though it won’t take long and it won’t interfere with the Super Bowl.
- Court of Honor – COH is a week from Tuesday on Feb 9th. If you have completed a rank advancement or Merit Badge, please email this info to Mrs. Yu at amandajane.yu@cox.net and be sure to put COH in the Subject line.
- We will be participating in ‘Scout Sunday,’ a nationally recognized event that is typically held in February. We will hold our Scout Sunday on Sunday, Feb 14th.
The Scout Sunday tradition was started to make people in houses of worship aware of Scouting, and to allow Scouts to live out their ‘Duty to God,’ pledged each week.
The Scout Law says that a ‘Scout is Reverent’ and that Scouts of all ages promise to do their Duty to God. These values strengthen youth character in their family, community and faith.
The troop, in conjunction with Chaparral Christian Church, will participate in Scout Sunday. As it is also Valentine’s Day, the church will hold one service at 10:00am and follow that with a brunch. There will be a variety of ways for the Scouts to do their duty during both the church service and the brunch. We will start sign-ups this week. Stay tuned for more details.
- We will be visiting the Cross Fit gym across the courtyard during our regular meeting on Tuesday, Feb 16th. Please print and complete this Form – CFC Release Short. You can turn it in any time up to and including at this meeting. Should be an awesome experience!
- Our annual Ski Trip is coming up, Feb 19-21st. We will be heading up north to Snow Bowl this year. They have had excellent snow coverage, so it should be a fantastic trip! Scouters are welcome too!
- We are looking to visit Cactus Pool during our Feb 23rd meeting in order to teach/learn some swimming and lifesaving rank requirements. More info to follow.
Wow, it’s shaping up to be a busy and fun month! I look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow night!

Alex Demski, Eagle Scout!
Hello Troop 648
We have a new Eagle Scout in the Troop 648 family…congratulations to Alex Demski, T648 Eagle Scout #50!
Alex passed his Eagle Board with flying colors on January 14th. We are very proud of Alex’s outstanding accomplishment and look forward to his continued participation and leadership in the troop. Among a million things, it takes perseverance, hard work, dedication and mostly desire to get to this point. All things I have personally seen Alex demonstrate over the years. It’s a tremendous accomplishment and we look forward to watching Alex do many more great things!
Watch for news about Alex’s Eagle Court of Honor coming soon. You won’t want to miss it!

Earn $s by Donating Items for the Rummage Sale This Weekend!
Hello Troop 648
From David Yu:
How would you like to help me help you?
Do you need service hours or just want to be helpful? I am looking for Scouts and Adults to sign up for Blessed Sacrament’s annual Rummage Sale this Saturday, January 16th. There are two time slots to choose from: 7:00am – 11:00am or in the afternoon from 1:00pm – 5:00pm. If you are there between 11:00am – 1:00pm a free hamburger/hot dog lunch will be supplied. If you can only work an hour or 2, let me know.
Also, there is also an opportunity to earn money for your Scout account! Need $s for the upcoming ski trip to Snow Bowl or Summer Camp in beautiful Emerald Bay, CA?  Bring in/collect/get donated —  clothes, shoes, hats, duffle bags, sheets, or sleeping bags in any size or color. It doesn’t matter if the items have holes in the clothes or only one shoe. All items will be donated to Planet Donate and the money raised will be portioned out to Scouts that bring in donated items. If you bring in a significant amount of clothes, you will receive money donated from your clothes only. Tell your friends and family you have a great opportunity for them to clear out all those clothes, shoes, etc. that don’t fit and help a great cause at the same time!
If you have any questions or if you would like to sign up, call or text David at (602) 750-8323, there will be a signup sheet on Tuesday night. Donated items can be brought in Tuesday night or dropped off on Saturday after 4:00pm.
Thank you!
