A Gold Medal Trip!
Hello Troop 648
What a wonderful trip! Our group of 11 scouts and 8 adults ventured northeast to Sunrise Ski Resort for our annual ski trip. The group included some old pros and some new converts and both skiers and snowboarders. Last weekend’s major snow fall provided a solid base as we skied and boarded under a beautiful blue and cloudless sky. Near spring temps saw most of us shedding layers as temps approached the 50s.
A record personal best (24 runs!), two awesome birthdays to celebrate (Marshall B. and Aidan B.), a jump gone awry, a couple rank advancements (congrats Reese G. and Alex D.), full stomachs and many air hockey, foosball and competitive table tennis matches rounded out the weekend.
Special thanks to Kevin W. for organizing the trip, the Beyers for some awesome chili! and Mr. Parizek for cooking and hauling the trailer. Another successful and memorable Troop 648 outing! We are still working on our final costs for the trip and will email them out later this week.
See you tomorrow night for our weekly meeting!

Troop 648 Life Scout Project
JAMES DEANGELIS LIFE PROJECT
How can I give back to the community? Great question!
Help New Life Center (Domestic Violence Shelter)
By Donating Personal Care Items For Survivors Of Abuse
Please donate any of the following items by bringing them to a February Scout meeting and/or to the COH on Tuesday, February 24th: Facial Cleanser, Body Soap, Hand Soap, Toothbrushes, Toothpaste, Mouthwash, Dental Floss, Shampoo & Conditioner, Hair Styling Products, Nail Clippers, Vaseline, Q-Tips, Toilet Paper, Kleenex, Diapers, Wipes, etc.
These in-kind donations are critically important for the families of New Life Center since most arrive at the shelter with little more than the clothes they are wearing.
A few facts about New Life Center:
- NLC provides more than 34,000 nights of safety, shelter and services to more than 900 women and children on average each year. NLC is devoted to providing a safe haven and services to help families escape domestic violence.
- Due to its unique design allowing privacy for each family, NLC is one of the few shelters in the state to accept teenage boys.
- Over 95% of the women completing the program do not return to the abusive environment from which they came.
Please collect donations from your family, friends, neighbors, healthcare providers, and church members, too. Let’s make this donation drive a huge success!
Thank you for your help and support!

Sunrise Ski Trip is Almost Here!
Hello Troop 648
The Sunrise Ski Trip is almost here and it should be a great one! Sunrise has excellent snow coverage and we should have clear, blue skies and mild temps (low-mid 40s during the day, 20s at night). We want to confirm attendance and provide some last minute packing ideas.
Here is the latest info we have for attendees:
Scouts (13 total):
- Kevin
- Michael M (rental/ski)
- Cameron (lesson, rental/ski)
- Cullen (rental/ski)
- Reese (lesson, rental/ski)
- James
- Marshall
- Zach R (lesson, rental/ski)
- Aidan (rental/snowboard)
- Harry
- Alex DeA
- Alex Dem (lesson, rental/ski)
- Jack P
Adults (8):
- Bruce (driving, 7 total)
- Rick (driving, trailer, 4 total)
- James C (driving, 5 total)
- Jim H. (driving, 5 total)
- Dave B (driving, 2 total)
- Jacob B
- Michael H
- Doug (rental)
If I have inadvertently left someone off the list, please let me know ASAP. If you are renting (from Alpine) and I don’t have that listed, please let me know.
Some additional last minute items to pack:
- Most important – HELMET! This is a BSA requirement. These can be rented from Alpine, but NOT in Sunrise. They don’t rent helmets anymore.
- Ski/snowboard personal gear: layers to include long underwear, shirt or turtleneck, jacket or fleece like jacket and wind breaker of some sort, gloves, hat, google or sunglasses, warm socks, ski pants or something that will stay dry.
- Sunscreen!!! We will have clear skies, high elevation and the sun is brutal when reflecting off the snow.
- Sleeping bag, sleeping pad, pillow and a bath towel. We won’t be using any linens.
- We will be traveling in Class As. After that, the Scouts can pack whatever is comfortable. We are skiing just on Saturday, so Fri night in the cabin, Sat night in the cabin should be sweats, PJs, whatever is comfortable.
- Medicine should be checked in on Friday in the parking lot.
- We will be meeting between 4:30-4:45pm on Friday, with departure at 5:00pm. If you can’t make it by 5pm, please let me know.
- If anyone has an electric griddle, please let me know. We may want to borrow it.
- We are still adding up the total costs for the trip. Different adults are buying food, etc. Unlike most trips, it will probably be next week when we have final accounting as well as what we end up with for lift ticket costs, lessons etc. Therefore, we will collect $s or have $s transferred from Scout accounts next week.
- Please remember your Permission Slip, which can be found on the website under Documents.
- Cash for your Scout for Friday night dinner on the road <$10 is usually sufficient as we stop for fast food.
- HELMET and SUNSCREEN!
- Meals will include: Sat. breakfast oatmeal, muffin, juice, milk, fruit; Sat, lunch is Parizek-a-Palooza Lunch and Gab Fest burgers, brats; Sat. dinner is Beyer’s World Famous Award Winning Omaha Chili (!), Sunday is our fly away Vegas Buffet with eggs, pancakes, bacon, and more (sadly, no Keno).
See you tomorrow!
