March 3-5 Outing Information and CPR Class Start Time is 6:30pm SHARP!

Hello Troop 648,

This is a reminder that we have another great campout scheduled for this weekend….and it’s not too far away!  We will be going to a spot just north of Carefree, Arizona call Sheep’s Bridge.  As of today the weather is scheduled to be sunny and in the mid 70’s during the day.  The lows should be around the 30-40 range during the late night.  Great sleeping weather!!
The activities we will be doing there are fishing, hiking, and advancement.  We have the option to take 1 mile hike to swim in a natural hot spring.  Please meet at the church, south parking lot near the shed at 5:00pm. We will be coming back around noon on Sunday.  Click here to sign-up for the camp-out.
We will not be having a typical scout meeting this week (CPR Class replaces our regular meeting – 6:30pm SHARP start time) so attendance to the campout will be only communicated via email.  We need an accurate headcount so that grubmaster and food assignments can be made.
Look forward to seeing you this weekend!!
Thanks,
Ian Achor

Kevin Weinhold – Eagle Project Information

Hello Troop 648

We are back from a successful trip skiing and snowboarding at Sunrise Ski Resort. And now, it’s back to business.

Kevin Weinhold has been very busy planning and organizing his upcoming Eagle Scout project! The project is scheduled for Saturday, February 25th and will benefit the Skate After School program.

We will be building skateboard ramps for the kids at Skate After School, a non-profit organization aimed at providing underprivileged elementary school kids an opportunity to learn how to skateboard and a place to make new friends!

Kevin has asked that we please bring power drills, screw drivers, gloves, eye protection and a great attitude!

Skate After School is located at 2604 W. 1st Street Tempe, AZ 85281. For additional information, please visit - http://www.skateafterschool.org

We will meet first thing in the morning on February 25th.

This is a worthy organization and excellent project. Please save the date and join us for a fun day helping our wonderful community.

If you have additional questions, please let me know.

A final reminder – we will NOT have our regular troop meeting tomorrow night, February 14th so that we may all enjoy a fun Valentine’s day with family and friends.

See you soon!

Final Word on this Weekend’s Ski Trip

Hello Troop 648

Couple final comments on the ski trip this weekend:

  • Due to some tight schedules, we are moving the meeting time to 4:30pm, with a departure at 5:00pm. We will meet in the southeast corner of the church parking lot near our shed/canoes/trailer.
  • Please don’t forget SUNSCREEN, WATER and a HELMET!
  • Andy Gay (thanks Andy!) will be picking up 2 boots, 2 skis and 2 poles for the following people on Friday:
    • Eric and Ian Achor
    • Cameron and James Copley
    • Zane Gay
    • Jon, Quentin and Landon Komar
    • Michael, Doug and Karin McFetters
    • Zach Ramsey
    • Wyatt Seggie
  • If you rented equipment from Ski Pro on Camelback and are expecting us to pick it up and your name is NOT on the list above, please call me asap.
  • Outside of personal gear, your Scout should pack a sleeping bag, pad, pillow, towel and shampoo/toiletries
  • They will need cash (or pack a meal) for dinner Friday night. All other meals have been arranged.
  • Reminder that we travel in Class A uniform (minus the neckerchiefs)
  • If your Scout would like to sit in a chair at lunchtime, we bring and share some, but ok to bring if they want.
  • I will have a map for the drivers, but the cabin address is:
    • 4284 Diamond Creek Circle, Pinetop, AZ 85935
  • As this is unlike most other outings, we will gather up all the costs including food, cabin, transportation, lift tickets, lessons (if applicable), etc. and post an amount due in the week or so after the outing.

I think that should do it!  Looking forward to a great weekend of skiing, scouting and camaraderie. Call or email me with any questions.

Services for Toni Annette Kuhl

Troop 648

The following is information regarding services for Toni Kuhl. If you did not know Toni, she is the mother of three former Troop 648 Scouts, Matthew Hawk (Eagle Scout #20), Adam Hawk (Eagle Scout#23) and Patrick Kuhl (Life Scout). Toni and her husband Kurt were long time active members of the troop. Toni gave selflessly to the troop and, along with Kurt and their sons, are a major reason for the successful troop we have today. Camp Geronimo – Summer Camp

Greetings!

It is time to think about Summer Camp 2017. This year, we will be returning to our “home camp” at Camp Geronimo, following two years over in California. It will be nice to be home!

The dates for camp this year will be Saturday, July 8 – Saturday, July 15 during Session 6.

Program features include: 47 merit badges, including 11 that are Eagle Required! A few highlights include the Horsemanship program, the Blackpowder Rifle Program, Archery, Climbing, Canoeing, Geocaching, Search and Rescue, and others. This is a great opportunity to knock out numerous Eagle Required merit badges that are challenging to get outside of summer camp, such as Environmental Science and Lifesaving. Geronimo is one of only a few camps that offer all three Citizenship merit badges. There are also miles of hiking trails and great campfire programs.

The cost of summer camp this year is $395 for scouts, which includes all food, tents, program, and transportation to and from camp. The payment schedule is as follows:

$100 – February 28, 2017
$100 – March 31, 2017
$100 – April 30, 2017
$95 – May 31, 2017

If you are planning to attend summer camp this year, please let Mr. Benyi know over the next few meetings. Adults wanting to attend part or all of the week should also let me know. We will have more information about summer camp at the Court of Honor on 2/21, as well as the Committee/Parent Meeting on 3/7.

Thanks!

Scout Sunday (February 5th) Volunteers Needed!

Hello Troop 648

Awesome turnout last night at CPK for the troop social and fundraiser! Thank you to everyone that made it for fun, fellowship and great food. We will send out the raffle winners soon.

This Sunday, February 5th, we will provide service to our wonderful charter organization, Chaparral Christian Church.

We will be participating in ‘Scout Sunday,’ a nationally recognized event that is typically held in February. The Scout Sunday tradition was started to make people in houses of worship aware of Scouting, and to allow Scouts to live out their ‘Duty to God,’ pledged each week.

The Scout Law says that a ‘Scout is Reverent’ and that Scouts of all ages promise to do their Duty to God. These values strengthen youth character in their family, community and faith.

We really need your help! Scouts, Scouters, parents, siblings, grandparents, friends, etc. are encouraged to sign-up to help with the following:

  • Greeters- Welcome those who are attending the 9am or 10:30am service
  • Bulletins- Pass out church bulletins prior to the 9am or 10:30am service
  • Ushers- Collect the offering and share communion at the 9am service
  • Staff- Set up and help manage Arizona Scouting Museum display tables

Please sign-up for one or more shifts by clicking on this link. Scouts should wear Class A uniform.

Thank for your help and support and see you on Sunday!
