Roper Lake Outing

What a great trip we had this Veteran Day Weekend.  We ventured down to Roper Lake State Park for some beautiful (and a little cold at night) weather, fishing (no fish were harmed by Troop 648), Canoeing (Dylan Carson survived his canoe experience), and a great campfire and Flag Retirement Ceremony (Just be thankful that your retirement ceremony wasn’t like the Flags that we set ablaze this weekend).  Big thanks to all those who pitched in and helped out – Aidan Brown for organizing the outing, Quentin Komar for leading the Outing and being the Scout in Charge, and our Adult leaders:  Dr Komar, Mr Barone, and all the way from Tucson, Mr Copley.  Here are some pictures of the outing.  Here’s hoping that those who did can do it again, and those who couldn’t can do it next time.

This past Week’s amazing meeting

We were very honored to have Phoenix Fire Captain Dana Medlin present at this past week’s meeting.  Captain Medlin has been a firefighter for 30 years.  He has worked in NC, Ok, Texas,  and Arizona and currently is a Captain with The Phoenix Department. Captain Medlin became involved with Arizona Search Dogs 12 years ago. He became interested after having the opportunity to work with Search Dogs during the Oklahoma City bombing and knew immediately it was something that he wanted to be involved with.
Arizona Search Dogs is a nonprofit (501c3) organization that trains, certifies, and developes Canine Search Specialist teams to be mobilized with Urban Search and Rescue Task Forces and to assist state and local jurisdictions in urban and wilderness search and rescue activities.  Captain Medlin has had 3 dogs live with him and currently has 2 dogs named Rainy and Elvis.  Captain Medlin has been deployed to disasters like Hurricanes Harvey and Ike.  At the meeting Captain Medlin brought with him Rainy and Elvis, and he discussed canine training, why canines are so important for the fire department, how the dogs work, disasters he’s been to and much more.  Also, the dogs demonstrated what they’ve been trained to do.

T648 Vampiree 2018 rehash

This weekend 14 scouts, 3 fathers of scouts, and two other leaders who will jump at any excuse to go camping headed north of Payson to this year’s Halloween weekend Camporee (Vampiree!) – a gathering of 550 people in scouting from our district in a celebration of scouting skills, camaraderie, and costumes. Getting up close and personal with other troops and packs from the valley was quite literal, as four troops were housed in our campsite built for one. We also had a wonderful time getting to know better our brother Pack 647 Webelos, a pack recently started at our charter organization. But with activities planned almost all day, and with well timed free periods to take a break and play in the creek, follow elk tracks, eat wild blackberries, or spend money at the make-shift trading post, not much time was spent in the campsite. Things I heard – the scouts didn’t really bat an eye at hanging out with the district’s first all-girl boy scout troop (still an explorer troop until 2019) who cooked, knotted and shot right next to them as part of our group all day. One of our patrols lauded its creative menu planning as ‘unique’ – wienies and hash is an interesting combination, or turkey and bacon on white bread sandwiches for breakfast anyone?   However, when it came time for serious competition, the dutch oven delights our young cooks pulled together had the judges drooling, and our troop clearly had two of the top five rated costumes in the whole camp. They also were successful in defeating the vampire apocalypse by getting everyone in their group across the field without anyone touching the ground.  At the end of the day, when the only times that our boys had to use their personal first aid kits were for a skinned shin, and a cut forehead, the trip was trending positively. And when the only thorns from ‘Thorns and Roses’ were the ‘cold weather’ (45 degrees is cold??) and everything else was a rose, you know the time spent together was once again primo!

Last Night Scout Meeting

WOW!!!!!!!  What a great turn out.  Thanks to everyone who was able to make it to the meeting last night.  It was a great show of force and support to the Scouts.  At one point I counted more parents/leaders than Scouts!  We were able to complete most of the Board of Reviews and all of the Scoutmaster Conferences due to everyone pitching in.  We will attempt to be better organized to make sure that parents don’t come and sit and wait to be asked at the meeting.  I know some were “standing by” and ready to help, but never got the call.  Thanks again for making sure that the Scouts have a fun and rewarding Court of Honor next week.

ALL HANDS ON DECK!!!!

A general alarm call is being sent out to the adult leaders and parents of Troop 648.  Next week is the week before the Fall COH.  This usually means there is a big push for the Scouts to try to finish up Merit Badges and get last minute Rank requirements and Scoutmaster Conferences signed off.  I currently have at least 3 Board of Review requests, and 2 Scoutmaster Conferences requested for next week.  It would be very helpful if any available parent could attend the meeting next week so that we can perform as many reviews as possible before the following week’s COH.  This is an extremely important part of Scouting – the recognition and awards the Scouts receive for all their hard work over the past few months.  Thank you in advance for your participation, and as always thank you to all leaders and adults for their continued support in Scouting.
