Crossing Over

Good morning!

Many thanks to the youth and adults who attended last night’s Arrow of Light ceremony for Cub Scout Pack 40.  We welcomed two new scouts into our troop as they crossed over the bridge.  But just as importantly, our youth congratulated the other seven boys who also crossed over, and  represented Boy Scouts as an opportunity for them as they continue to decide upon troops, or even whether to continue in the scouting program.  Plus, it is always a hoot at any event with flaming arrows and fires that flare into different colors!

Please remember that tomorrow night is PLC at 6PM for the leadership team.  Hopefully you all have had oppportunities in the past week to plan for both the family outing coming up next month, and summer camp – we are looking forward to great participation in each.  We also will begin our biggest and most enduring service project in March as we provide hosting, serving and cleaning support for our host church’s fish fries all during lent.  Please sign up for a night (or four or five!) and get ready to eat some of the best fried fish & chips in Arizona while helping out our charter organization.  The service opportunities are Fridays during lent, from 4:30 (or whenever you can get there) until 7:30.

See you tomorrow night!

Ski Outing

Good evening

A fine ski outing was had by over 30 T648 youth and adults this past weekend – and when the biggest injury is a sunburn, that is one most excellent ski adventure!  I hear 5 of our Eagles were soaring above the slopes – two in full Class A dress regalia.  Many movies were watched, there was fine dining in the parking lot at Cafe Parizek, and every hill was conquered by our intrepid crew on skis and snowboards.  Thanks to the adults who drove, to Mr. McFetters for pulling it all together, and to the scouts who made the trip a memorable one for everyone.

Please remember that tomorrow night at 7PM is both troop meeting and family/committee night in parallel universes and conference rooms.  The agenda for the adult meeting includes a deeper dive on summer camp, and an overview of the fundraising opportunities to defray as much of the cost as you and your son wish to participate in.  We have already had some fantastic ScoutORama ticket sales results, and there is much much more on the horizon between now and July.

Keep in mind that family camp is coming up March 18-20.  All parents, grandparents, siblings, dogs, lizards, and any other residents of your home are welcome to attend in the Catalina foothills north of Tucson.  You provide your own food for the trip, and we’ll all come together for a pot luck on Saturday night where you bring whatever you want to grill for your family, and a side dish to share.  It is the very best way for you to see your scout in action, and to get to know other T648 family members in a relaxed and beautiful setting.  We hope that most of our troop family will be able to join us.

My Calendar’s Full

Good evening!

You almost need a program to keep up with all T648 has going on.  But in the absence of a program, pull out your calendar.  Tomorrow night is the troop meeting, with the primary agenda focused on final preparations for this coming weekend’s ski outing to Sunrise Ski Resort.  This weekend, for those of you not going on the outing, you have the opportunity to earn lots of $$.  There will be three days worth of slots for Scout-O-Rama ticket sales, as well as an opportunity for the older boys to again assist the Knights of Columbus during their February social dinner on 2/12.  We also will have a parent/committee meeting beginning at 7PM on 2/15 – lots of information on summer camp and fundraising – plan to be there.  We also have learned that the date for young Mr. Huston’s Eagle Project will be Saturday, March 5th.  Please plan ahead for fun and service hours in a Scottsdale trail building opportunity.

If you’re headed for Camp Mataguay this summer (and who is not interested in Southern California summer camp?!), you should be at $100 in deposits to be current.  Please be using SOR fundraising opportunities to help supplement the cost through your scout account.  Also, you should be planning to bring the BSA health form along to your next physical.  It is a requirement to have a current medical signed by each scout’s doctor in order to attend summer camp.  The medical form is in pdf form on the T648 website.  For those who have seen their doctor in the last 6 months, doctor offices generally will fill out the form based upon the last physical (albeit, sometimes for a nominal fee).  Only5 short months until camp!

See you tomorrow night.  What a great month to be a scout!

Mr. Cole

Summer Camp 2011 – Mataguay Scout Ranch

Greetings!

From July 9-16 T-648 will have the great fortune to spend the week at Mataguay Scout Ranch up in the hills outside of San Diego, CA. I will be presenting much more specific information about this year’s forthcoming summer camp experience at the parent meeting on 2/15/11.

In the interim, we need to begin making payments to San Diego-Imperial Council to cover the cost of camp, which is $400. This can be paid to the Troop in (4) payments of $100. This is the payment schedule for camp:

$100 Deposit – Due ASAP

$100 Payment 2 – Due 3/1/11

$100 Payment 3 – Due 3/29/11

$100 Payment 4 – Due 4/26/11

Payments can be paid by cash or check (make out to Troop 648) OR pay out of your scout account.

Note: We want for everyone in the Troop to come to Summer Camp; this is a key part of the scouting experience. If cost is an issue, please see me and we can discuss fundraising or other opportunities.

Thanks!

Mr Benyi

The Week That Was

Good evening

Congratulations once again to all the scouts honored at last week’s Winter Court of Honor – terrific accomplishments of rank advaancement, leadership training and merit badge / shooting awards. Many thanks to those who contributed hours of preparation, food & beverages, and thanks to all you parents for your presence and support.

This past weekend the shed cleaning resulted in newly painted chuck boxes, and a good inventory on items needing refurbishment or replacement.  Kudos to Mr Williams and Mr Andrews for their organization and leadership.  That same evening was the first opportunity for our PLC to serve the Knights of Columbus and their guests at their monthly Prime Rib Dinner and social event.  Many thanks to the four scouts who served in the kitchen and the dining room – we are off to a great start with this new partnership between the KoC and our troop.  Mr Coffey and Mr Agich were very pleased, and therefore, so am I!

Tomorrow is the troop meeting at 7, following  the merit badge class at 6.  We have a den  of Webelos and their parents attending, so as always, please be mindful of the scout oath and law - let’s have a terrific meeting and put our best foot forward – for us, and for them!

Mr. Cole

Personal Management

As a reminder, the Personal Management merit badge class will begin at 1800 tomorrow evening.  Also, do not forget to download and copy the requirements and workbook from meritbadge.org.

See you then……Mr. Martin
